Ismail Necmi

CAREER

Istanbul based photographer Ismail Necmi’s first professional experience in visual arts were as an assistant art director, set and costume designer, assistant photographer and video editor. He started to shoot photos in 1992. At the same time he trained as a lawyer at Istanbul University and graduated in 1997.

Ismail Necmi’s photography appears as a single frame within a larger set of frames often evoking sceneries in the style of Film Noir. When working with human models, he focuses on transformation, death, pornography and gender. Necmi presented his first solo photography exhibition Transformation in 2001 at Dulcinea, Istanbul.

He is currently working on an interactive photography project “The image is YOU!” posing the question “What do you imagine yourself to be?” The project is based on interaction between model and photographer taking place before the actual shooting.
